Employees' Right to Disconnect: Recent Amendments on the Portuguese Legislation

The Portuguese Parliament has passed a labour legislation that subjects employers who contact their employees outside of working hours to fines. The concerned legislation which entered into force on 6 November 2021 affirms that employees' right to disconnect is now recognized by Portuguese law.

The new legislation further stipulates that employers are obliged to help employees pay their excess bills (internet, electricity, etc.) caused by working remotely.

France, Spain, Belgium, Slovakia, Italy, the Philippines, Argentina, and India are among the other countries that recognize employees' right to disconnect.
